Ground Breaking Ceremony on Motorway M35
The joint bid of Colas Hungária Zrt. and Colas Út Zrt. proved to be the cheapest valid offer for the M35 motorway’s new section between main road 4 and the Debrecen Airport access road (chainages 43+620 - 49+050 km). The 5,430-metre-long motorway leg requires the construction of two overpasses, three underpasses and two interchanges, with a need for nearly one million cubic metres of embankment material. The ground breaking ceremony was held on 6th July, 2016.

Colas Út's Bitumen-Emulsion Vehicle Fleet Undergoes Upgrade
Colas Út plans to replace two of its emulsion sprinklers in 2016. We have already received a new vehicle fitted with a 5,000-litre Strassmayr sprayer, which will be operated by the Western Hungarian Regional Directorate. The other sprinkler also carries Strassmayr equipment with an 8,000-litre tank, and is suitable for towing a trailer – this vehicle will be delivered by April, and will be stationed in the company’s Gyöngyös emulsion plant.

Roman road in Tállya
Via Romana constructed a roman road trial section in Tállya, where the crew from the local government’s stone mason workshop selected the block stones. The layers were made of separately-compacted M80 and M22 natural stone from Tállya, but the trial section was built with three distinct technologies.

Reconstruction of main road 31, phase I and II completed in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county
Colas Út Zrt. was the consortium leader of the 115 kN axis load reconstruction works of main road 31 in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, including road and public utility works. The project involving the performance of technical tasks in a value of 5.4 billion HUF on 17 km lengh started late autumn in 2013. On 31st March 2015, we handed over works successfully on deadline.
Extension of tram line 1 completed
Back in October 2013, the consortium uniting A-HÍD Zrt. and Colas Alterra Zrt. won the public procurement procedure for the reconstruction and extension of Budapest’s tram line 1 between Kerepesi Road and Fehérvári Road.

Road Reconstructions in Újpest to be Completed in May 2015
In October 2014, we set out to reconstruct Tél Street in Újpest (Budapest’s District IV). The project, involving the complete structural renewal of the roadbed and the sidewalks, is scheduled to come to an end in May 2015. Similarly to most of the Hungarian capital’s road-reconstruction schemes, the new traffic arrangements will favour bicycle traffic. The cost of the investment amounts to 309 million forints. This year, we will reconstruct the Rózsa street interchange.

We are on the move!
From 1 December 2014, Colas Hungária (including the Major Projects Division and offices of the Central European Directorate) and Colas Út’s headquarters, currently located at 6-12 Kórház Street, will move from the Globe 3 office building in Óbuda to 30 Daróczi Road in Budapest’s District XI, where they will be joined by the management of Colas Alterra, who are set to relocate to the new premises from their Budaörs head office.
Barrel Rolling Ceremony in Rátót
Celebrating the completion of a bridge by rolling a barrel across it is a longstanding tradition. According to old superstition, being the first to cross a new bridge brings bad luck – therefore, a barrel is rolled across it as soon as the structural works are completed, in order to “divert” the curse onto the barrel. We reinterpreted the tradition somewhat, as the bridge in question is not completely new and we also waited with the ceremony until the bridge was ready for traffic.
Laboratory Suitability Test of Pothole Repair Mixes
As a common practice, a public procurement procedure is launched each year by Magyar Közút Nonprofit Zrt. for cold pothole repair mixes. The tender description specifies both bitumen emulsion mixes and storable (made with thinned bitumen or special binders), bagged materials having maximum grain sizes of 8 and 11 mm.
Exhibition: Pump Stations in the Sárköz Region
The industrial monument pump stations located in Báta and Lankócz have undergone comprehensive reconstruction under the Duna Project. Financial support from Colas Alterra made it possible for the staff of the Szekszárd-based Wosinsky Mór County Museum and colleagues from the water authority to organise spectacular, colourful exhibitions in the facilities. Visitors of the exhibit are provided an insight into the historical background of the installations, and their role in flood- and stagnant water control.

Colas Returns to the M6
Following an order from Porr Építési Kft., Colas Hungária Zrt. built 75,000 m2 of new SMA 11 (mF) 25/55-65 asphalt wearing course on motorway M6 between chainages 76+200 - 104+450. The works were executed between 10 July and 19 August 2014. Milling works were performed by Colas Út as a subcontractor, and we also obtained the hotmix from Colas Út’s Dunaharaszti mixing plant.
Frost and de-icing salt resistant bridge construction concrete mixes in Europe
On 30 July 2014, a conference was held at Colas’ Technology Directorate with the aim of resolving recent issues regarding frost- and de-icing salt resistant concrete mixes in Hungary. The primary goal of the gathering was to inform the participants on standards, specifications, technologies, testing procedures, and qualification methods applied in Hungarian in international practice.

Annual Safety Week at Colas
Standards and regulations for health and safety aspects of such works vary between countries. These rules tend to concentrate on safeguarding motorists, while often failing to provide ample protection for people working near the flow of traffic. But who should protect us then?
New method for testing binder content
In each country, thousands of tests must be performed every year, and chlorinated carbohydrates – a range of chemicals having various carcinogenic effects – are commonly used as solvents. Initially, the most widely applied solvent was chloroform, which was later replaced by trichloroethylene. However, at Colas, we have already switched over to the application of less dangerous tetrachloroethylene.
The significance of tyre-pavement noise in road construction increases
CPX (close-proximity) measurements are carried out with a special trailer or with microphones fitted onto consoles mounted close to the tyres. The essence of the CPX method lies in the evaluation of signals recorded by microphones set up at a given distance from the vehicle’s or the trailer’s tyres.
Bitumen Foaming Device on the Oros Mixing Plant
We equipped our Benninghoven mixing plant located in Oros – currently producing asphalt for motorway M3 – with a new bitumen foaming device. The Colas-developed unit was mounted onto the machine by colleagues from the Major Projects Division. Operational trials have already been completed, and laboratory testing of the produced asphalt mix is currently under way.
Experimental blasting with charge-loading vehicle
For decades, Colas Északkő Kft. has used blasting sequences with large-diameter holes for primary ground-breaking in the company’s Tállya quarry. However, as related technologies develop and clients keep presenting higher requirements, blasting companies are coming up with newer and more sophisticated techniques.
Alterra receives third and double Award for Excellence
We entered two – related, yet distinct – projects into the 2013 Construction Industry Award for Excellence competition. In the category of infrastructural facilities, we submitted a joint application with Hídépítő Zrt. for the Budapest Central Wastewater Treatment Plant (BCWTP), whereas we entered separately in the environment and water engineering category with the current line draining of the BCWTP.

A sewer network and sewage treatment plant development scheme is under way in Kondoros with financial backing from the European Union.
Protected species assessed in Zemplén quarries
The observation of plants and birds was carried out by environmental protection expert Viktor Gábor Papp, who organised a multi-day, 24-hour surveillance of the species living on the quarry sites. His work and the data collection were aided by the rangers assigned to the area, as well as the staff of our facilities.

Dust and noise level measurement in Kesztölc
On 7 October, dust emission and noise level measurements were implemented at the Kesztölc quarry acquired by Colas Északkő in the autumn of 2011. The tests carried out by GEON System Kft focussed on inhalable dust and workplace noise levels, and involved three of our colleagues working at the site with front loaders, excavators and dump trucks.

Replantation of protected vegetation on the M85 worksite
During the preparation phase for the M85 project, a number of environmentally sensitive obligations had come up, among them tree cutting works on the Natura 2000 area crossed by the carriageway, and replantation works in order to save specimen of a protected species, the Small-headed Thistle.
Colas Északkő Upgrades Fleet of Machinery
Colas Északkő acquired both pieces of equipment within the group: the Metso HP 300 cone crusher was purchased from Colas Polska, while the Liebherr R 954 C crawler excavator arrived from Colas Est, France. The machines worth 30 million forints apiece will aid works in the Nógrádkövesd plant.

Flood control works along the Danube
The second longest river in Europe after the Volga, the Danube’s average water discharge is 2300 cubic metres per second. This waterflow quadrupled during the flood in late May and early June this year: each second approximately 10000 m3 of water rushed down in the Danube’s bed, covering floodplains and – unfortunately – some of the surrounding residential areas. The extent of damages inflicted by the river reached several billion forints and some 1600 people were forced to leave their homes.
With 21st century standards in focus, Colas’ professionals are currently involved in the preparatory work aimed at optimising the road network on the level of the national economy.

As part of the Regional Development Operative Program (ROP), the Technology Directorate of Colas Hungária submitted a tender application for a grant under the framework of the Central Hungary Operational Programs (KMOP-2009-1.1.4) – “Promoting Company Innovation”. The Managing Authority of ROP determined the tender entitled “The Introduction of Energy-Saving Road Construction Technologies at Colas Hungária Zrt.” – a two-year R&D program – worthy of support.
