As we learned from the public procurement notice: The City of Miskolc plans to resurface the 2×2-lane divided roadway on Szentgyörgy Road and Klapka György Road, as well as the 2×1-lane section of Pattantyús Ábrahám Géza Road, which serves as a continuation of the former. The work will be carried out by experts from Colas.
The entire north-south axis is affected
As a 2,241-meter-long, divided-lane, 2×2-lane road, Szentgyörgy and Klapka György Roads carry the traffic of one of Hungary’s most famous housing estates. The main road of Avas, home to 40,000 residents, handles a very high volume of traffic, and its extension, Pattantyús Ábrahám Géza Road, also bears a significant load. The 489-meter-long, 2×1-lane section leads from the Avas Lookout Tower into the center of the district.
Although the main task is to replace the road surface, the sidewalks along Pattantyús Ábrahám Géza Road will also be renovated, including the replacement of a 114-meter-long pipe railing designed to protect pedestrians. The roads affected by the project are bordered by Miskolctapolcai Road to the south and Mendikás Dűlő to the north.
There are six bus stops and nine bus bays on the affected roads, and twenty-one crosswalks facilitate traffic flow. All of these can be made accessible thanks to Colas’s work.
The renovation is being carried out in 700-meter sections
We asked Colas experts about the details of the project. As they explained, curbs, the asphalt binder and wearing courses, as well as the CP paving at bus stops, are being replaced along the entire length.
“At Szentgyörgy and Klapka Streets,” they said, “we have divided the right and left lanes into three sections, each roughly 700 meters long.”
In the first phase, work is being done on the right lane of Section I, the left lane of Section II, and the right lane of Section III. In the second phase, work will proceed on the left lane of Section I, the right lane of Section II, and the left lane of Section III.
“We are currently working on the second phase, which began on June 29. We closed Pattantyús Street on June 29; only public transportation vehicles are allowed to pass through it, according to the temporary traffic plan.”
In several places, the entire road structure needs to be replaced
As the main road bisecting Avast, Szentgyörgy út handles heavy traffic at the intersection with Ifjúság út; therefore, the milling and paving work is being coordinated with particular care in consultation with experts from Miskolc Városi Közlekedési Zrt.
“We also need to replace the road structure at the end of Klapka György út, along the entire 489-meter length of Pattantyús utca, and along approximately 168 meters of Szentgyörgy utca,” we were told.
So while they are carrying out renovation work—meaning the current technical specifications will remain the same after the renovation—in several places the contractors will also need to make changes to the road base and structure. The scope of the expected work is also evident from the fact that they anticipate milling 48,000 m2 of pavement, repairing 227 utility manholes, and installing more than 4,200 m3 of binder course and nearly 2,000 m3 of wearing course.
