Sewer construction under Halomi Road
The reconstruction was rendered necessary by the deteriorated state of the main collector, which was built back in the 1980s and has broken down on several occasions in the past years. Following the recurrent malfunctions, FCSM Zrt. attempted to repair the main collector, to no avail. Ultimately, the company opted to launch a tender for the complete remodelling, which was won by Colas. In the planning phase, a number of technological solutions were considered – finally, the client picked the construction of a modern reinforced-concrete sewer built with jacking. The decision was justified by the school and nursery located in the street, and the congestion in the morning and afternoon rush hours. The jacking construction technology enables us to keep the size of broken-up surfaces to a minimum, limiting disturbance to motorists and local residents. Prior to starting the works, we adjusted our microtunnelling device to local circumstances, taking into account the unfavourable soil conditions. At the separation, the site requires the installation of additional equipment, which we thoroughly coordinated with the experts of the German manufacturer.

Simultaneously with the jacked sections, we also built some open-ditch segments, where the depth of six metres, the alignment of the sewer, and the location of other public-utility lines represented the greatest difficulties. However, by deploying our well-proven shoring system and machinery, we managed to establish a suitable and safe working environment. Following the completion of jacking operations, the flow of the old channel has to be diverted into the new main collector, which requires every bit of expertise from our colleagues working on the site. According to the plans, a set of heavy-duty pumps will be set up to assist the transfer and put the new structure into operation. The works commenced in the end of summer, and are expected to come to a close by mid-December. Once completed, the client will receive a channel that is set to operate reliably for decades.
