Eco-friendly and energy-efficient technologies at this year's HAPA conference

The Hungarian Asphalt Pavement Association (HAPA) held its 17th annual conference at the Ramada Aurora Hotel & Resort Lake Balaton in Balatonalmádi on 23-24 February 2016. The event’s main topics revolved around eco-friendly and energy-efficient technologies and testing procedures, along with trends in European standardisation.

A number of our colleagues prepared presentations for this year’s conference: together with the development engineer of MOL, Dr. András Geiger, Colas Hungária chief technologist Lajos Balog shared the latest experiences regarding asphalt mixtures prepared with rubber bitumen. The quality manager of Colas Északkő, László Ézsiás, held a presentation entitled The expectations of asphalt producers – opportunities for crushed-stone manufacturers, and the business-development manager of Colas Út, Ildikó Lancsák, delivered her speech on The “forgotten” emulsion.

Ildikó started her presentation with an international overview, calling attention to the recognition of emulsion – contrary to the Hungarian practice – in professional circles abroad. The pace of building entirely new roads shows a slowing tendency worldwide, because the majority of road networks have already been completed by now. As a consequence, the maintenance of existing pavements is becoming increasingly significant, and the focus shifted to prolonging the life span of roadbeds in order to postpone comprehensive reconstruction works as much as possible. The demand is growing for economical and environmentally sustainable solutions that enable experts to extend the life cycle of existing pavements. With relatively low-cost interventions performed in due time, expensive reconstruction or restoration jobs can be avoided, making this kind of pavement preservation
cost-efficient in both the short and long term. One of the keys to pavement durability is bitumen emulsion. Although the current use of emulsion in Hungary is limited to applications as an adhesive, the material has a much wider range of functions in store: it is also suitable for the preparation of surface coatings, fibre-reinforced coatings, cold pothole repair mixtures, as well as coloured coatings and slurry seals. Bitumen emulsion can also serve an excellent binder, as evidenced by the Novacol and Valorcol technologies.

Ildikó has been in charge of emulsion-related business development strategies at Colas Út for one year. She is devoted to stretching out the life span of roads by propagating the broader application of bitumen emulsion.
